What an Appalling Way for the People of God to Behave, and Treat Others, Including the Poor!

It is difficult to accept the trafficking of people is on-going around our society today about what must be for some a frightening and terrifying scale.
Those mixed up in trafficking of individuals should listen to what Almighty God must say through His faithful servant, the prophet Amos. This was happening around 760 B.C. and yes it continues in countless nations today.
The people of God refused to obey God’s commandments. They would not apply what was laid down in God’s Word for the People of God. Is that not astonishing?
There was and it is a trade in trafficking people with a global scale.
When Amos was raised up to prophesy and preach he had a strong message to proclaim and that same strong message needs proclaiming today.
Many thousands of folks are ill treated and maltreated and mistreated and abused, and the ones thousands involved will some day have to stand ahead of the throne of Almighty God and be judged with this appallingly cruel behaviour.
Judah and Israel could only keep going in their land during those times, whenever they kept in contact with God. God seeks to keep in touch with them via a series of courageous prophets – Amos being one of these simple prophetic men.
Our God will take care of all this open sin.
Amos now speaks about Judah, Israel’s sister, where Jerusalem was the funding.
Amos, preaching in the north, points to the south, also to his home country of Judah.
They had rejected the phrase of the Lord.
They hadn’t kept the commandments.
They allowed themselves being led astray by false gods, or lies and deceit, and the were the lies in men.
All this became happening in Jerusalem and Judah, where King David once reigned.
Some folks don’t like to hear about a God who judges. But, the same God who loves and forgives is also a God who judges and can send even His own chosen people away into Babylon and Exile for seventy years.
We are aware that when the Assyrians came the enemy took trees from the Mount of Olives and set fires in the foot with the city’s walls until they crumbled.
Judah was proud and arrogant, and a lot of were quick to agree with Amos, however their approval is more subdued, given that they too are Israelites.
And now, the shepherd from Tekoa in Judah, speaks directly to Israel.
They were selling people! Read what dear Amos preached in Chapter 2 of his book inside Old Testament.
You can sell the righteous. You grind the faces in the poor. This was not how the people of God needs to be treating people of God.
In a time of prosperity these were selling people!
You have temple prostitutes, as Israel adopted Canaanite practices. Religion was saturated with immorality.
You get drunk in the services.
There is an awkward silence. They stare at Amos.
God’s Law was given for various reasons and one of these brilliant reasons was the protection with the poor. All the prophets speak in defence in the poor.
His prophetic interventions are noticed to deal with real and factual situations, and particular places, at specific times.
Reading Amos allows us to see our own situation, and our present setting, as God sees it.
It pays to seek to see situations from God’s perspective.
God spells out through Amos, and we read so clearly, “This ‘s what the Lord says”.
